Ways to reset when overstimulated – Part 2 – Body

Our bodies hold so much more than tension – they hold the stories of our stress!

Overstimulation can pull your nervous system into overdrive, activating the sympathetic system (fight, flight, or freeze). But movement, pressure, and rhythm can send powerful feedback to the brain:

You’re safe now. You’re allowed to rest.

The body often knows what we need before our thoughts can catch up. When you reset physically, your brain listens.

Try these body-based resets:

  • 🧍‍♀️ Stretch your arms, jaw, and neck
These areas often store tension first.
A long exhale with each stretch helps deepen the reset.
  • 🫂 Hug a pillow, pet, or trusted person
Safe, soothing contact releases oxytocin – a hormone linked to emotional regulation.
Even self-hugs or pressure against a wall can work.
  • 🪑 Rocking, swaying, or rhythmic stimming
Repetitive movement is calming for a reason.
It helps regulate the vestibular system and may recreate the grounding sensations of infancy.
Let your body choose the rhythm.
  • 🚶 A short walk – even across the room
    Movement releases built-up adrenaline.
Walking mindfully or pacing can help clear mental clutter and reset your rhythm.
  • 🛁 A warm shower or bath
Heat dilates blood vessels and calms the nervous system.
The sensory containment of warm water can feel like an emotional cocoon.

🌿 There’s nothing lazy or indulgent about taking care of your physical self. It’s a radical act of regulation.
